Every carrier on the schedule measures a box, not a bag. That single fact explains most of the confusion at boarding: a bag advertised as 55 cm is often 59 cm once the wheels are counted, and the sizer at the gate does not care what the listing said.
An empty soft bag measures smaller than the same bag on the way home. Fill it the way you intend to fly, close it, then measure.
Height, width and depth at the bulging point, not along a flat seam. A soft bag that swells two centimetres in the middle is two centimetres over.
Wheels, handles, side pockets and the trolley sleeve all count. Scoot and AirAsia say so explicitly; the others simply measure the whole object.
Most 7 kg ceilings cover the cabin bag and the personal item together. A hanging scale, packed bag, both pieces, one reading.
Inches are measured on the shell in some catalogues and on the whole case in others. A case sold as 20 inches can arrive at 57 cm with the wheels, which is over on the length for every carrier on the schedule.
A frame is rigid. A soft bag can lose two centimetres when it is pushed into a sizer; a polycarbonate shell cannot lose any. If your bag clears by one or two centimetres, prefer the soft one.
It is the second most common gate surprise. Scoot caps it at 40 × 30 × 10 cm, AirAsia and VietJet at the same, Cebu Pacific at a narrow 20 × 20 × 35 cm. A day pack that swallows a laptop rarely fits any of them.
Two pieces at 3.6 kg each are 7.2 kg. The bag can be perfectly sized and still fail the only test the gate actually performs with a scale.
Test your own numbers in the assessment box. It compares the sorted sides against the carrier's sorted frame and reports the tightest margin, which is the same arithmetic the plates on the shelf use.
